Awarded For Service During This International Crises Period 1 May 1960 To 26 May 1960
Operation Overflight involved a series of Central Intelligence Agency U2 missions in restricted airspace to monitor Soviet military and nuclear operations. One flight, piloted by Francis Gary Powers, resulted in a shootdown of his U2 and positioning by the Soviet Union to force the United States into admitting an international provocation that, under some interpretations, was an act of war. Direct apologies and concessions by the President of the United States to the Soviet Union reduced international tensions and re-established peaceful ditente. Armed Forces of the United States, its Allies and opposing forces of the Soviet Union stood down. In Acknowledgment and Appreciation for Your Honorable Service You were instrumental in ensuring the Defense of the United states during this Crises period.
