Awarded For Service in Vietnam During the Battle Period: 17 October 1967
The Battle of Ong Thanh was the result of many U.S. and Allied efforts to force a reluctant enemy to engage in a decisive battle. In a desperate effort to provoke the enemy to fight a small American unit sacrificed itself to a much larger enemy force resulting in American forces arriving to decimate the enemy in retreat. This Battle provided much needed information on enemy tactics that eventually allowed the wholesale destruction of the Viet Cong and the decimation of many North Vietnamese Army units the following year during Tet 1968.
