Awarded For Service During the Operation Period, 4 October 1957

The pioneering successful launch and orbiting of a space satellite by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a hostile and undemocratic league of aggressive nations possessing nuclear weapons, initiated a Global National Security Alert of Epic Proportions. For the first time in Human History the capability of a hostile power to rain destructions on Earth from the Heavens created fear and panic throughout with Allied world. American Forces stationed domestically and abroad were activated on Full Alert in fearful preparation of space attack.
