Initiation of Nuclear Defense Status

Awarded For Service During the Operation Period, 1 October 1957 Numerous Russian threats to conquer or annihilate the Democratic Powers along with Russian Air Forces deploying throughout the Soviet Union and signals of enemy nuclear deployment in the Western Hemisphere provoked the United States to initiate round-the-clock nuclear defense preparedness. Air, Sea and Ground Defensive forces of the United States were activated in strategic locations to operate continuously day and night to discourage a first attack on Allied soil.
