Awarded For Service During the Alert Period, 17 April To 19 April 1961. Increasing Sovietization of a former Democracy ninety miles off the coast of Florida mandated a dramatic military response from the United States. But because of regional agreements signed over the previous hundred years, the United States could not appear directly involved. Unfortunately, the Cuban Exile military force that demanded to undertake the military mission to re-Democratize Cuba proved wholly unworthy and unreliable. Although the immediate desire of the Operation to remove the current Cuban leadership was unsuccessful, the long-range goal of preventing Cuba from becoming a military threat was a complete successful after American steadfastness forced the Soviet Union to abandon its hope of creating an adversary nuclear power within momentary striking range of the North American continent.
